Right. We certainly don't want everything handwaved. By and large I think it's more fun for characters to do things with information rather than spend IC time and tagging energy trying to find it out.
For example, if I spent a dozen tags with an NPC or another player character just to find out some info, I'm gonna end up frustrated when my reward for that effort is just "other people also already know that." Give me the information about the cheese demons in a handwave, OOCly establish what they look like, where they're found, how/if they can be dealt with in various ways. Then we can plot how Nazuna and Godot equip flamethrowers and go after them, or try to cook up some cheese demon repellent, or some other active scenario. The payoff is whatever RP scenario the information creates, and that's where the engagement happens.
Having this all in a handwave/ooc post puts less focus on what the information is/trying to keep it secret, more on what possibilities arise from it.
